Friendly, reliable, hassle-free service — from our family to yours. That’s what’s guided us for six decades and three generations. From our founders’ humble beginnings to our tradition of community leadership, Salem and Marion County have always been our home, and we take pride in keeping our beloved community neat and looking its best.
It all started back in 1956 with two young couples and a Chevy pickup. Dale and Mildred “Millie” Neliton and Orville “Orey” and Pauline Kliewer went door-to-door to find their first customers. They were also reuse pioneers: before plastic liners were common, they kept customers’ cans clean by repurposing old newspapers as makeshift liners.
Keeping curbs sparkling means staying ahead of the curve with new innovations. We rolled out Cushman carts in 1979 — serving more customers with fewer trucks — and automated trucks hit the streets in 1987. These days, we serve customers even more efficiently with automated routes and all-in-one service for trash, recycling, and yard debris.
Collaboration, coordination, and committed leadership — caring for our community takes all of us. That’s why D&O helped found Salem Area Collectors, now the Mid-Valley Garbage and Recycling Association, in 1987. Together, MVGRA members improve waste collection, promote recycling, and educate the community.
Waste management isn’t just clean streets, it’s public stewardship. D&O offered curbside recycling service beginning in 1975, and today we gather 16 kinds of recyclables from every customer we serve. By partnering with Garten Services of Salem, we’re able to divert even more recyclables from the waste stream.
